Jacobs Gallery Update

GNSI Oregon Group:

Recently, I sent out a “Call for Art” for a possible exhibit at the Jacobs Gallery in Eugene, Oregon.  Due to the possibility of over-extending ourselves, we have decided to withdraw the application to the Jacobs Gallery for the 2013-14 exhibition season.

GNSI Pacific Northwest Chapter has secured dates for an exhibition for its members at the Seattle Convention Center for January to March 2014.

Since we had invited the Washington GNSI members to participate along with our group we felt we would not be able to get enough work together from everyone to fill the large space that the Jacobs Gallery has to offer.   Several GNSI Oregon Group members are also members of the GNSI Pacific NW Chapter, making this even more challenging.

However, after much discussion, we have come up with an exciting alternative for future exhibitions for the GNSI Oregon Group.  Please stay tuned!  More information and opportunities will be forthcoming.

I sincerely want to thank those of you who sent images of your wonderful work for the submission.

Regards,

Rebecca Brown-Thompson

Interpreting the Landscape – Through the Eyes of Birds

September 22 and 23, 2012
Tryon Creek State Natural Area
11321 SW Terwilliger Blvd. Portland, Oregon

  • Please note we will need a RSVP for this weekend’s attendance since there is limited space in the Nature Center classroom. Please reply to Kris Kirkeby by Sept. 10.
  • For more information on this weekend’s activities contact her at k2kirk@comcast.net

Day 1 - Saturday Barbara Gleason will do a mini-workshop that will involve examining museum mounted bird specimen and learning how knowledge of plumage and feather tracts help us to better depict birds in illustrations.
Later in the afternoon Rebecca Brown-Thompson will present a mini-workshop on Sign Interpretation Principles in preparation for day 2.

Day 2 – Sunday Rebecca will start us off with a quick discussion on field sketching, suggested tools and methods for field sketching, specifically plants but will be applicable to other subject matter.
Forming groups we’ll spend the greater portion of the day doing rough field sketches for our interpretive signage in the Tryon Creek Natural Area, focusing on the weekend’s theme and areas of interest we identified the day before. Consideration of sign placement and content will be important aspects as well.

Late afternoon we will gather again and assemble our sketches as a group and discuss our design and subject matter choices.

A special thanks goes out to David Cohen, Executive Director of Friends of Tryon Creek for co-sponsoring this event. We would like each attendee make a $5.00 donation for this organization.

Pollinator Week is June 18-24, 2012!

Pollinator Week was initiated and is managed by the Pollinator Partnership.

Five years ago the U.S. Senate’s unanimous approval and designation of the final week in June as “National Pollinator Week” marked a necessary step toward addressing the urgent issue of declining pollinator populations.  Pollinator Week has now grown to be an international celebration of the valuable ecosystem services provided by bees, birds, butterflies, bats and beetles. The growing concern for pollinators is a sign of progress, but it is vital that we continue to maximize our collective effort.  The U.S. Secretary of Agriculture signs the proclamation every year.

As a personal lover of bees, and for all you who draw birds, butterflies, bats, beetles and, of course, botanical illustrators, this may be of interest to you.  www.pollinator.org

Wildflower Viewing at Silver Falls

This is a great time to see the wildflowers at Silver Falls State Park. Good trails for viewing them are the Howard Creek Loop Trail and Buck Mountain Loop Trail. There are less people on these than on the Trail of the Ten Falls. They're multi-use and still muddy so bring waterproof boots and look out for equestrians and mountain bikers. Newport Weekend Summary

The GNSI Oregon group met at the Visual Arts Center in Newport. It was a beautiful setting with many large windows looking down onto the beach. We started with a general business meeting including a survey – querying members about future meetings and what content people might like to explore. Joann Carrabbio was a really fun person to have for the watercolor workshop (painting clouds and water), and she went far beyond what we all expected as far as time, materials, and instruction – generously sharing her knowledge. She has a nice and engaging teaching style. The weekend wouldn't have been nearly as rich without her workshop. We dined at the local microbrewery – Rogue Brewery – actually we dined in both Rogue Pubs in Newport – since we were a bit unclear about directions! We reconvened the next morning at the Hatfield Marine Science Center of Oregon State University with our tour host - Michael Lui - for a behind-the-scenes tour of their critter tanks that included the Giant Pacific Octopus who was in-training (actually quarantined) before his stage debut in the public tank. We ended our weekend program by touring the Center and some attendees continued on to the Oregon Coast Aquarium while some headed to the sunny beaches!
